Looking For Great Freelance Jobs In Writing Or Editing

Becoming a freelance writer or editor is every student’s dream job. However, with the world and his dog looking to follow a similar path, it is very easy to get lost in the crowd or stuck with the detritus that no-one else wants to do. Are there really any great jobs out there? Well, the first thing that I would say to you is like everything in life you won’t find out unless you look. You are certainly not going to find one by daydreaming, or wishful thinking.

Here are my top tips for finding that dream job:

  • Ask your friends and family
  • Word of mouth is without a shadow of a doubt the best way to ensure that you don’t end up scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to freelance work. If you are part of a student community, then it is a fairly safe bet that someone that you know will already have made the leap. Some helpful pointers can make all of the difference when you are first starting out.

  • Ensure that you have the correct skills
  • It is easier to get started as a writer than it is to become an editor. Whereas a lot of people are prepared to take a punt on a new writer, most people want their editors to come with some experience. So, how do you do this? Well, you could ask any of your friends who own blogs if you can edit their posts, free of charge. This is a great way of building a portfolio and the free stuff that you do now will pay tenfold in future.

  • Ensure that you have the correct software
  • Writing and editing will both be a whole lot easier if you invest in some basic software. I am thinking grammar and spell checkers for starters. You will be able to easily handle basic editing and writing assignments with this software, and it eliminates embarrassing and potentially costly mistakes.

  • Contact local businesses
  • A simple phone call to a handful of businesses will give you a feel for whether they might be receptive to your services. Think long and hard in advance about the kinds of services that you could offer them and have your pitch ready. Don’t hard sell. Remember, chances are they will be extremely busy. A foot in the door is all that you need at this stage.
